Approaches For Cloud Transformation - Factors Influencing Cloud Technology	In a recent interaction with Emmanuel Christi Das, Editor, CIOReviewIndia, Biswajit Mohapatra, Partner, Global Delivery Leader - CIO Advisory, Digital Modernization and Cloud Transformation, IBM shares how to approach for cloud transformation and the factors influencing cloud technology.

What should be the essential approach for a CIO in guiding cloud transformation?

The growing responsibilities of CIOs today are centered on proactive agility to anticipate digital disruption, not just respond to the current business environment. The pandemic is driving CIOs to increase pace of digital reinvention, accelerate hybrid multi-cloud adoption and embrace exponential technologies. Hybrid multi-cloud reality is reshaping the IT for future, reimagining data driven intelligence with speed and rebuilding businesses around experience.

Cloud Transformation is an on-going initiative. Defining the right business case, delineating cloud adoption roadmap, establishing right governance strategy, investing in nextgen skills and talent, integrating cognitive technologies, operating cloud environments at scale and instilling sustainable agile culture are key essential elements of successful cloud transformation.

It is of paramount importance to build a Cloud Center of Competency (CoC) around the fabric of people, process and products (P3) to foster engagement and momentum in driving cloud transformation agenda. A cloud business balanced scorecard-based approach can aid in measuring, monitoring, tracking effectiveness and taking corrective measures to thrive in the new business environment. CIOs are increasingly adopting Cloud-First strategy to stay ahead of the curve.

In the same context, what do you think is the future of Cloud transformation in India? How do you foresee the invention of new cloud technologies for sectors  and industries?

Wave 1.0 of Cloud was focused around cost optimization. We are now in Wave 2.0 with an accelerated shift towards business growth. Cloud Adoption is changing the way traditionally IT is procured and serviced.

India is an emerging growth story and next growth engine of technology-driven transformation across the globe. The market for Cloud transformation in India is still largely unexplored and there are countless opportunities. For example, IDC says 88% of Analytics and AI systems in India are still on-premises. But if you look at all the cutting-edge innovations in these fields, they are in-the-Cloud, so there is plenty of scope of growth in such areas. I believe in the next few years, we are going to witness a tsunami of innovation in multiple sectors and industries, all facilitated by cloud and by the democratization of cutting-edge technologies it brings to forefront. The future of cloud computing innovation and career opportunities shines bright for India

According to you, what are the major factors a business looks upon for adopting cloud transformation?

Accelerated enterprise innovation, enhanced global reach, scale and services, flexible architecture, on-demand scalability, increased agility, augmented interoperability, improved responsiveness, expanded ecosystem of business platforms, reduced dependency on heritage skills and time to market advantage to introduce new products and services are the major factors driving cloud adoption for enterprises.

Cloud addresses the need for Fail-Fast approach in today’s fast-paced digital landscape. The journey to cloud must be plotted strategically with security as a fundamental requirement. The evolving cloud-native landscape is poised to deliver resource efficiency, higher development velocity, resiliency through autonomous self-healing capabilities. Continuous reinvention of skills, upskilling and reskilling to unlock the team potential towards cloud adoption are other CIO top priorities.

The global public cloud service market is projected to reach $266 billion in 2020. Based on your perception, what are those major factors contributing to this  growth.

The global public cloud market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 23%. Cloud is the foundation of new platform economy. To leverage the new-world-order where focus is on open-source, security, interconnection and co-creation, public cloud adoption is extremely critical. As we accelerate Digital Transformation journey, rising adoption of exponential technologies such as AI/ML, Automation, IoT and Blockchain becoming mainstream and expanding the growth of public cloud market.

Enterprise scalability, open innovation, improved resiliency, virtual contactless delivery, process and compliance, increasing need for business to lower down operating cost, enhanced productivity and service quality are also some of the other factors contributing towards this growth. The next phase of public cloud service market growth will be propelled by the shift from “migrating to cloud” to “modernizing to cloud” and “building cloud native applications”.

Lastly, what is the future of cloud technology in Indian sectors? Enlighten us on a few useful cloud technologies that could amplify business processes.

The Cloud story is gaining a strong foothold in India. I believe India is well poised to witness the next revolution in innovation and consumer choices across all sectors and walks of life fueled by power of cloud.

The 21st century belongs to the man and machine duo. Increased automation powered by borne-on-cloud systems, AI/ML technologies, cognitive insights, rise of IoT, human-machine interaction and chatbots fueled by natural language processing for Indian Languages are some of the key cloud technologies that will shape up and amplify the business processes in India over the next decade.

Security, Containers, Microservices, Serverless architecture, Internet of Everything (IoE) and Proliferation of ‘As a Service’ model Including Business Process as a Service (BPaaS) powered by Cloud are some of the other important technological pivots in the next few years.
