5 Trends Transforming Cloud Computing

Mugunthan Soundararajan is a business transformer with 33 years of leadership experience in telecom, power, banking and internet industries. He has also served the government sector with his thoughtful leadership approach. He has worked in utilizing technology, enabling IT organizational transformation, formulating executing IT visions, strategies and policies, and helped in cost reduction, improving productivity, and thereby achieving business success.

It’s a known fact that organizations of all sizes, have recognized the importance of cloud computing. While many are running critical workloads in one or more public clouds, rest are either thinking about complete migration to the public cloud or adopting other forms of cloud computing, like hybrid cloud.

Some of the top trends in cloud computing are:

Hybrid Cloud:

A hybrid cloud computing setup typically leverages the existing infrastructure [on-premises], private cloud, and one or many third-party public cloud services to derive the right benefits. This trend is on the increasing side and will help the organizations not only to optimize the TCO but also in leveraging the services in public cloud to provide superior end user experience.

Serverless Computing:

It’s estimated, according to Gartner, that more than 20% of global organizations will aim to deploy serverless technologies in 2020 and beyond. This mode of operation will fundamentally change not just the economics of what is back-end computing, but will become the core of the future of distributed computing itself.

Microservices and container orchestration technologies, such as Docker Swarm, Mesosphere and Kubernetes support container distribution management. These technologies are highly suitable for managing large-scale applications which are microservices based as they enable container creation as well as management of numerous containers.

Because of these specific advantages listed above, many organizations are focused towards adopting microservices as an alternative to the complex monolithic application architecture.

Quantum Computing:

With the increasing and globally distributed user-base, complex application architecture, the requirements for high-end computing infrastructure is highly required to provide rich end user experience. This calls for increased usage of computing power and in turn, more energy. Quantum computing has the potential to limit energy consumption and will have a positive effect not only on the environment but also on the economy.

AI-ML:

Every organization tries to leverage data to the maximum extent to derive more insights and in that process they continue to generate more data. It’s infeasible to have the right products and solutions on-premise and the cloud computing services are the right way to get the desired outcome at the right speed and at the lowest cost using the AI/ML technologies.

Some of the emerging AI technologies include “Explainable AI” and “Conversational AI”. Explainable AI is necessary if the companies need proper accountability during the various stages of the ML processes. Conversational AI has a larger scope for the organizations to build potential applications which can be consumed at large, such as by Amazon Echo and Google Home.

Disaster Recovery / Security / Compliance:

One common area of concern for any organization in using cloud computing is on the security front. However, as all companies are trying to become cloud-native or digital, the utmost important aspect to be considered is on the DR setup and in complying with the various regulations that may be applicable viz., GDPR, HIPAA etc., Further, even the slightest downtime means loss of revenue, loss of customers and damage to the brand reputation. The public cloud offers multiple solutions in meeting all of these requirements and using the same could be the right approach for the organizations.
